Product Description

Lupinus texensis

Texas Bluebonnet or Texas Lupine is a very showy, drought tolerant annual Wildflower, with light-green, velvety stems, topped by clusters of up to 50 fragrant, blue, pea-like flowers. It is the state flower of Texas and is planted along thousands of miles of roadside here and elsewhere, forming oceans of blue in Spring. The plants start off in the Fall when they emerge as small seedlings. Growth continues over the mild Winter months and then in the Spring the plants rapidly grow larger before sending up a 8-15 inch tall plume of blue flowers with white tips. Texas Bluebonnet needs well-drained soils and full sun, they cannot tolerate poorly drained, clay based soils. Seed planted in poorly drained soils will germinate, but plants will never fully develop. The natural habitat is prairies, open fields and hillsides. It is often used in wildflower meadows, flower gardens or hanging baskets. It provides nectar for bees, butterflies and other insects. Propagate Texas Bluebonnet by sowing seed or planting seedlings in the Fall. The seeds are gravelly looking and very hard; they need scarification for best germination. To do so, put seeds in the freezer overnight and then douse with boiling water to crack the seed coat. Soaking seeds overnight is also effective. They are easy to grow from seed at this point. If planting this species in areas where it has not formerly grown, it may be helpful to inoculate the soil with Rhizobia (soil-borne bacteria which form nitrogen-rich root nodules). Allow the plant to re-seed itself by leaving the seed pods intact on the plant until they turn from yellow to brown. Warning: Plants in the Lupine family, especially the seeds but all plant parts, can be toxic to humans and animals if ingested. Keep children and pets away from this plant and be careful after handling any plant part.
