Product Description

Bouteloua eriopoda

Black Grama is a warm-season perennial, deciduous, Native and low-growing range grass with yellow flowers in mid Spring. It grows well in semi-shade, open grasslands and needs a minimum of 160 frost free days to grow successfully. It has high drought tolerance and is adapted to light, shallow soils, and like many native grasses, does not need high fertility. The leaves are green in Summer and it is very tolerant of fire. Seedling vigor under both cultivated and range conditions and forage production is good. Black Grama is the most important forage grass over much of the drier desert grassland range of the Southwest. This grass provides sustained forage production and soil stability in adapted range conditions as a predominant species. Black Grama is palatable and nutritious to livestock all year, with relatively high protein and carotene content during winter. Natural propagation on range land is by vegetative reproduction by stolons. Nogal Black Grama was developed specifically for increased forage production and released in 1971 by the New Mexico State University Agricultural Experiment Station and the US. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service.
