Product Description

Schizachyrium scoparium

Little Bluestem is a warm season, perennial ornamental bunchgrass with a deep fibrous root system and fine-textured foliage. This mid-prairie species gets its name from the bluish color of the stems in the Spring, but most striking is the reddish-tan blaze of color of the leaves and fuzzy white seed heads in the Fall, persisting through winter snows. It is drought tolerant and adapted to a wide range of soils but intolerant of wetlands or irrigated sites. It forms very dense mounds 1 ½ to 2 feet in height and up to a foot in diameter. Little bluestem is wonderful in mass plantings, but it readily re-seeds so is not recommended for overly small gardens. Wildlife can use it to graze and for cover or nesting material, and small mammals and birds will collect the seeds. Little Bluestem is invaluable in xeriscapes and native wildflower plantings as an ornamental and accent plant, with especially great winter color. It is also useful for improving rangelands and stabilizing a wide variety of well-drained soils and areas. Itasca is a uniform type with excellent seedling vigor, selected from a high elevation, low-moisture site, and is adapted to climate extremes. It produces average amounts of high quality forage.
