Product Description

Elymus lanceolatus

Thickspike Wheatgrass is Native to the northern Great Plains and Intermountain regions of the western United States. It's drought tolerance, combined with a fibrous root system and good seedling vigor make this grass ideal for reclamation and the stabilization of disturbed soils. It should not be planted with introduced grasses, but is very compatible with slower developing natives. Thickspike Wheatgrass is cold tolerant, moderately shade tolerant, and very tolerant of fire. It is palatable to all classes of livestock and wildlife, although it is generally considered a relatively low forage producer. Thickspike Wheatgrass is similar to Western Wheatgrass, except it is not as coarse, it greens-up and heads-out earlier and it is more drought tolerant. It also does better on medium to coarse-textured soils. Western Wheatgrass may be a better choice on heavy textured soils and if there is a bit more rainfall (> 14 inches per year).
